BREAKING: Peter Obi Calls for Tinubu’s Resignation Over Monumental Failure in Governance

Obi made the call in a statement posted on his X account on Monday, drawing comparisons with the resignation announcement of United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer and emphasizing the importance of accountability in public office.

Peter Obi has called for Tinubu’s resignation over monumental failure in governance.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) Peter Obi has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to resign, citing what he described as a “monumental failure in governance” amid worsening economic hardship, insecurity, and declining living conditions across Nigeria.

Obi made the call in a statement posted on his X account on Monday, drawing comparisons with the resignation announcement of United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer and emphasizing the importance of accountability in public office.

According to the former Anambra State governor, Starmer’s decision to step down in response to public dissatisfaction over economic challenges and unmet expectations offers an important lesson in democratic accountability.

Obi recalled that before becoming president, Tinubu had repeatedly called on former President Goodluck Jonathan to resign over insecurity and economic difficulties facing Nigerians.

“Before 2015, our President on several occasions championed the call for the then President Goodluck Jonathan to resign over economic hardship and insecurity affecting Nigerians. During the Chibok school kidnapping incident, he demanded the immediate resignation of President Jonathan, arguing that the government had failed in its most fundamental duty of protecting lives,” Obi stated.

The former presidential candidate also referenced promises Tinubu made during the 2023 election campaign, particularly in the areas of electricity supply, anti-corruption efforts, and citizens’ welfare.

According to Obi, the President had urged Nigerians not to re-elect him if he failed to deliver on key campaign commitments.

He argued that conditions across critical sectors have deteriorated since Tinubu assumed office, citing persistent electricity challenges, worsening insecurity, rising cases of kidnapping, and deepening economic hardship.

“At present, however, these conditions have worsened. Electricity supply remains unreliable, insecurity has intensified in many areas, including kidnappings, and economic hardship has deepened rather than eased,” Obi said.

He added that sectors such as infrastructure, transportation, and anti-corruption efforts had also experienced setbacks.

The former governor maintained that the current state of the nation requires accountability at the highest level of government and urged the President to step aside.

“I, therefore, join Nigerians of goodwill in calling for the resignation of the President over monumental failure in governance. Such a gesture would help enthrone a political culture rooted in accountability and responsibility, rather than further entrenching impunity,” he stated.

Obi further argued that leadership accountability is essential to strengthening democratic institutions and restoring public confidence in governance.

According to him, a resignation under such circumstances would send a strong signal that public office is a responsibility rather than an entitlement and would help build a culture where leaders are held accountable for their performance.

The statement is expected to generate reactions across Nigeria’s political landscape as debates over governance, economic reforms, and national security continue ahead of future electoral contests.
