Former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Mohammed Lawal Uwais is dead.

 

 

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that Former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Mohammed Lawal Uwais, has passed away at the age of 89.

He died on Friday in Abuja, according to a family source familiar with the development.

Justice Uwais led the country’s judiciary from 1995 until his retirement in 2006, serving for 11 years.

Born on June 12, 1936, he left a lasting mark on Nigeria’s legal system during his time as Chief Justice.

 

After his retirement, he continued to play an active role in national matters. In 2007, he was appointed by then-President Umar Musa Yaradua to head the Electoral Reform Committee.

 

The group submitted its report in 2008, recommending new ideas to improve Nigeria’s electoral process.

 

Plans for his funeral and burial are already ongoing, as his family prepares to lay him to rest.
