Court has cleared Goodluck Jonathan for 2027 Presidential Election.
NewsOnline Nigeria reports that Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has been cleared by a Federal High Court in Abuja to contest the 2027 presidential election following a ruling delivered on Tuesday.
This Nigeria news platform understands that Justice Peter Lifu, who presided over the matter, held that Jonathan remains eligible to participate in the 2027 presidential race, dismissing efforts to stop his potential return to active presidential politics.
The suit was filed by Abuja-based lawyer Johnmary Jideobi, who sought an order restraining the former president from presenting himself as a candidate for any political party in the 2027 election.

The plaintiff also asked the court to prevent the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from accepting, processing or publishing Jonathan’s name as a presidential candidate.
Jideobi argued that, based on Sections 1(1), (2), (3) and 137(3) of the 1999 Constitution, Jonathan was no longer eligible to seek the office of president after previously completing the tenure of late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and serving another elected term.
However, delivering judgment on Tuesday, Justice Lifu ruled that Jonathan could legally participate in the election as a contestant.
The court ruling comes days after a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki reportedly offered Jonathan a waiver to emerge as the party’s sole presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 election.
Jonathan served as Nigeria’s president between 2010 and 2015 after succeeding the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua following his death in office before later winning the 2011 presidential election.
