ASUU Strike: Strike As Tool For Negotiation Disheartening- President Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has said the policies and investments of his administration in agriculture have helped the country to achieve food security.

Newsonline reports that President Buhari said in the last seven years his administration’s policy of “grow what we eat and eat what we grow” has saved the country from disruptions in global agricultural supply caused by COVID-19 and the Russia-Ukraine war.

“Because of our policies and investments in the last seven years, towards achieving food security, Nigeria is today much better prepared to cope with the inevitable disruptions in global agricultural supply chains occasioned by Covid-19 and the Russia-Ukraine war,” he said.

The president of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari stated on Thursday that unlike what his administration met on the ground, his police and investment in agriculture encouraged local farmers and rural economies.

“I said we must grow what we eat and eat what we grow. We have always been very conscious of the need to achieve food security in Nigeria, and to encourage our local farmers and rural economies,” he added.

He further stated that the country which he met dependent on foreign rice, now eats and imports local rice.

“This is a country that was once dependent on foreign rice. Confident that we can grow and eat Nigerian rice, we closed the border to foreign rice, and also put policies in place to support local production. Today Nigerians are eating home-grown rice,” Buhari said.

Recall that President Buhari had on July 9 said his administration understands that the country is facing many challenges in the cost of living, and promised to address it.

President Buhari said, “In Nigeria today, we are indeed facing challenges related to security and the cost of living. I am aware of all these challenges, and our administration is working hard to resolve them. I want to assure that I will not rest until I bring relief to Nigerians.”

President Buhari’s statement on food security, according to ordinary Nigerians runs contrary to what is obtainable in the markets.

Nigerians are continually lamenting the high cost of food, petrol, and other essential family needs in the country.
