ADC May Split After 2027 Primaries, Atiku Likely to Clinch Ticket – Baba-Ahmed

Baba-Ahmed said the ADC is currently crowded with politicians nursing presidential ambitions, a situation he believes could trigger an internal crisis after the primaries.

Baba-Ahmedhas claimed that ADC may split after 2027 primaries and Atiku is likely to clinch ticket.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that former presidential adviser Hakeem Baba-Ahmed has predicted that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) may experience a major fallout after conducting its 2027 presidential primaries, warning that the party could lose key figures once a candidate emerges.

Baba-Ahmed said the ADC is currently crowded with politicians nursing presidential ambitions, a situation he believes could trigger an internal crisis after the primaries.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, he projected that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is likely to win the ADC presidential ticket, a development that could prompt other aspirants and their supporters to exit the party.

“If ADC goes to convention and it certainly will, because that’s what former Vice President Atiku wants—he will get the ticket,” Baba-Ahmed said. “And then, a lot of people will walk out because many people are in that party for the same reason: they want the ticket.”

Peter Obi and the ADC Ticket

Baba-Ahmed also referenced former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, stating that Obi prefers to be handed a party’s presidential ticket rather than contesting it at a primary election.

According to him, Obi may have been given assurances of securing the ADC ticket before publicly aligning with the coalition, but those promises now appear uncertain.

“One of the reasons Peter Obi is saying, ‘I’m not here for number two, I’m not here for convention, I’m here to fly the flag,’ is because people were initially whispering to him,” Baba-Ahmed said. “But now they are saying, ‘Join the queue. You’re not the only one with ambition here.’”

He added that Obi favours emerging as a consensus candidate instead of participating in a competitive primary process.

“Peter Obi doesn’t do convention. He goes there to be anointed,” he said.

Warning of Possible Implosion

Baba-Ahmed warned that the emergence of a presidential candidate at the ADC primaries could mark the beginning of an implosion within the party, as aspirants who fail to secure the ticket may leave alongside their supporters.

“So, the ADC will bleed after its convention because almost certainly former Vice President Atiku will win the ticket, and when he does, some people will walk out,” he concluded.
