Peter Obi has proposed 5-year single Presidential Term for Nigeria.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that Former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi has called for the abolition of Nigeria’s two-term presidential system, advocating instead for a single, non-renewable five-year term for the president.

Speaking during a courtesy visit to Governor Bala Mohammed at the Bauchi State Government House on Friday, Obi argued that the current four-year renewable tenure encourages incumbents to prioritise re-election campaigns over governance.

“It should be five years straight, so that people can come in knowing they have a job to do,” Obi said. “What people do now is to be president for one year and use the rest thinking about their next tenure. We must stop it—do your job and go.”

The 2027 presidential hopeful further pledged that if elected president, he would only serve one term, promising not to extend his stay in office beyond four years.

Obi also vowed to strengthen Nigeria’s political parties, making them more influential than individual officeholders.

“I want the party to be bigger than the president and the governors so that we can have orderliness,” he said.

PDP Governor Bala Mohammed Responds

In his response, Governor Bala Mohammed urged Obi to return to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), suggesting that the opposition could achieve more unity and political strength by harmonising interests.

“We want you to come back to PDP because that is where you belong. Politics in Nigeria cannot be done with ego, differences, and personal interest,” Mohammed said.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the call for a five-year single term echoes similar governance models in countries such as South Korea, where presidents are limited to one term to prevent the distractions of re-election politics.
