ADC has raised the alarm over Tinubu government’s plot to destabilise opposition coalition.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has raised concerns over what it described as a calculated and dangerous attempt by elements within President Bola Tinubu’s administration to undermine the growing opposition coalition.

In a statement issued on Monday by the party’s Interim National Publicity Secretary and National Spokesperson, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC alleged that former state chairmen and top members of its state executive committees from the North East and North West have been summoned to a secret meeting by senior officials of the Federal Government.

According to Abdullahi, “We have credible intelligence that the aim of this meeting is not national security or peacebuilding. It is to intimidate, coerce, and potentially co-opt these individuals into a fabricated plot against the opposition coalition. This is not politics, it is outright sabotage.”

The ADC described the move as a direct threat to Nigeria’s multiparty democracy, accusing government appointees of engaging in actions that could lead to a one-party state through fear and coercion.

“This surreptitious engagement with ADC State Chairpersons by federal government officials who should be addressing pressing national security challenges is a coordinated attack on democratic pluralism. This is how democracies begin to erode,” the party said.

The party linked the alleged intimidation to the recent surge in opposition unity, marked by the July 1st Coalition Declaration and the July 2nd unveiling of the ADC as the coalition’s political platform, which it believes has unsettled the ruling party.

“It is evident that the Tinubu administration having lost public trust feels threatened by a credible and united opposition. Instead of correcting its course, it is reverting to old tactics of destabilising rivals,” Abdullahi stated.

He reaffirmed the ADC’s position as a people-centered party and vowed to resist any attempt to infiltrate or manipulate it.

The party also called on President Tinubu to intervene, cautioning his appointees against subversive actions.

“We urge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take notice of these undemocratic moves and rein in those involved. He must demonstrate to Nigerians that he is truly committed to democratic principles. If the Goodluck Jonathan administration had suppressed the opposition in 2015, the APC would not have risen to power and he would not be President today,” the statement concluded.
