Kano Deputy Governor Abdulsalam-Gwarzo has resigned amid impeachment pressure.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that Aminu Gwarzo has resigned from his position as Deputy Governor of Kano State, bringing an abrupt end to his tenure amid mounting political and legal pressure.

His resignation was confirmed on Friday evening by Ibrahim Shuaibu, his Chief Press Secretary.

The development follows impeachment proceedings initiated earlier this month by the Kano State House of Assembly over allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of office, breach of public trust, and financial malfeasance.

During plenary on March 5, the Majority Leader, Lawan Dala, read the impeachment notice, accusing Gwarzo of financial impropriety during his time as commissioner for local government. He alleged that the former deputy governor “wilfully participated in the diversion of funds allocated to local government administrations for purposes other than those for which they were appropriated.”

The political crisis surrounding Gwarzo has unfolded against a backdrop of shifting party loyalties in Kano. Earlier reports had suggested that his troubles were linked to his alleged refusal to defect from the New Nigeria People’s Party to the All Progressives Congress, though the state assembly previously denied such claims.

In January, Abba Yusuf, alongside members of his cabinet and state lawmakers, defected from the NNPP to the APC, reshaping the political landscape in the state.

Gwarzo’s resignation effectively halts the impeachment process, but the allegations against him are likely to remain a subject of political and legal scrutiny.
