Electoral Act 2026

Atiku, Obi and Amaechi among other opposition leaders have rejected the Amended Electoral Act 2026 and accused APC of 2027 election strategy.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the leaders of opposition political parties in Nigeria have strongly opposed the amended Electoral Act 2026 recently signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The opposition coalition, which includes former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and key figures across major political parties, faulted the process through which the National Assembly passed the bill, describing it as defective and lacking transparency.

Addressing journalists at a press briefing, Ajuri Ahmed of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of attempting to reshape the political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections. He alleged that the party’s strategy is aimed at positioning President Tinubu as the only viable presidential candidate.

Ahmed argued that available data shows electronic transmission of results is feasible across all polling units nationwide. He questioned why the amended law retains provisions for manual transmission of election results despite technological capacity for full electronic reporting.

He also criticised the speed with which President Tinubu assented to the bill, noting that other important pieces of legislation did not receive similar urgency.

According to him, the recently conducted Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council election highlights the reasons behind what he described as the APC’s haste in securing presidential approval for the Electoral Act amendment.

The opposition coalition further rejected the outcome of the FCT Area Council election, stating that it served as an early test for the newly appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), a test they insist he failed.
