Electoral Law Amendment Stalemate: A Crisis of Conscience at the National Assembly By Festus Edovia

What is unfolding at the National Assembly over the Electoral Law Amendment is nothing short of a national embarrassment.

Electoral Law Amendment

What is unfolding at the National Assembly over the Electoral Law Amendment is nothing short of a national embarrassment. One is forced to ask whether some lawmakers have completely lost their sense of responsibility and indeed, their sense of shame. What should be a solemn legislative duty has been reduced to a reckless contest of self-interest, even as the country continues to bleed.

The question Nigerians must now ask is simple: where do we go from here? Many of these politicians act without conscience, as though they are far removed from the people they swore to serve and immune to the consequences of their actions. By their conduct, they appear to be telling citizens directly or indirectly that their suffering does not matter. The arrogance is dangerous and increasingly unbearable.

A small, powerful group wakes up daily and determines the fate of millions, treating citizens as expendable spectators in their own democracy. Lies are told without restraint, promises are broken without remorse, and yet, tragically, some Nigerians pushed into survival mode by hardship still defend and applaud these same actors. Cartons of noodles are shared, rented crowds are assembled, and praise singers are deployed. This is not democracy; it is degradation.

Enough must finally be enough. The growing culture of indifference within the corridors of power must be confronted. Nigerians cannot afford to remain silent while lawmakers conduct themselves recklessly on the floor of the National Assembly, as though the nation were a joke.

From top to bottom, there appears to be little regard for the people. Public resources are squandered on luxury, private jets, and excessive privileges, while millions of citizens go to bed hungry each night. This stark contrast exposes a moral failure at the heart of governance.

What kind of country allows such injustice to flourish unchecked?

This must stop.
