2027: Over 1,000 Islamic Clerics Ask Tinubu Not to Seek Re-election

Over 1,000 Islamic Clerics has asked Tinubu not to seek re-election in 2027.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that more than 1,000 Islamic clerics have called on President Bola Tinubu not to seek re-election in the 2027 general elections, citing worsening economic hardship and insecurity across the country.

The clerics made the call in a communique issued after a meeting in Kano focused on “An Assessment of the State of the Nation under President Tinubu and the 2027 General Elections.”

The development comes shortly after two Islamic groups, the Jama’atu Izalatil Bid’ah Wa’iqamatis Sunnah (JIBWIS) and the Qadiriyya Sufi sect, endorsed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima for the 2027 presidential election.

The endorsements were made during a visit to the groups by Senator Abdulaziz Yari, Director-General of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Campaign Council.

However, the clerics, under the aegis of Ko Da Naka… For the Struggle to Promote Good Governance and Community Development and the AFAQ Educational Foundation, expressed dissatisfaction with the Tinubu administration’s handling of the economy and other national issues.

They argued that the removal of fuel subsidy, floating of the naira, increase in electricity tariffs and tax reforms had intensified hardship for ordinary Nigerians.

The clerics said the government had continued to pursue policies that, in their view, were worsening the economic situation instead of reviewing and correcting them.

“It is unfortunate that the government has continued to insist on pursuing these policies, which are increasing hardship among the people, rather than reviewing and correcting them,” the communique stated.

They also accused the government of prioritising revenue generation at a time when rising living costs and unemployment were threatening the welfare of Nigerians.

According to the clerics, the current economic situation should be a major consideration ahead of the 2027 elections.

“Consequently, participants at the conference unanimously agreed that it would be inappropriate to re-elect this government in the forthcoming 2027 general elections if it does not change its harmful economic policies,” they said.

The position highlights the contrasting views among Islamic groups over Tinubu’s bid for a second term, with some groups already backing the President while others are calling for a change ahead of the 2027 election.
