Football is a world of dizzying highs and heart-stopping lows, where the line between glory and despair is razor-thin. Some managers have managed to carve their names into history books with a single season of brilliance, achieving feats that earned them fame overnight. But as quickly as they rose, their stars faded, leaving fans wondering what went wrong. These “one-season wonders” delivered unforgettable campaigns but could not replicate their magic. Let’s take a closer look at these stories of triumph and tragedy.

  1. Claudio Ranieri (Leicester City, 2015-16)

Claudio Ranieri’s name will forever be associated with one of the greatest underdog stories in football history. In the 2015-16 season, he took charge of Leicester City, a team that had narrowly avoided relegation the previous season, and guided them to an unprecedented Premier League title. With players like Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez playing the seasons of their lives, Leicester defied 5000-1 odds to conquer English football. Ranieri’s tactics and charm captivated fans around the globe, but the fairy tale turned sour the following year. With Leicester struggling near the relegation zone, Ranieri was sacked in February 2017. It was a harsh reality check in football’s unrelenting world.

  1. Roberto Di Matteo (Chelsea, 2011-12)

Roberto Di Matteo, on the other hand, delivered Chelsea’s most coveted prize in his first season as manager. Appointed as an interim boss in March 2012, he rallied a faltering Chelsea side to an FA Cup triumph and, most famously, their first-ever UEFA Champions League title. The final in Munich was a Hollywood script come to life as Chelsea defeated Bayern Munich in their own stadium. Di Matteo’s heroics earned him a permanent role, but the fairy tale was short-lived. By November 2012, Chelsea’s struggles in the league and Europe cost him his job. For Di Matteo, it was a case of lightning striking once but never again.

  1. Paolo Di Canio (Sunderland, 2012-13)

Paolo Di Canio’s tenure at Sunderland is remembered as much for his fiery personality as for his dramatic escape act in the 2012-13 season. Taking over a team in freefall, Di Canio inspired a stunning 3-0 victory over bitter rivals Newcastle United and eventually steered Sunderland to safety. His passionate celebrations and no-nonsense approach made headlines, but his authoritarian style soon alienated the dressing room. By September of the following season, after a string of poor results, Di Canio was shown the door, his tenure a brief but eventful chapter in the club’s history.

  1. Armin Veh (Stuttgart, 2006-07)

Armin Veh’s crowning moment came in the 2006-07 Bundesliga season when he led VfB Stuttgart to an unexpected league title. It was Stuttgart’s first championship in 15 years, achieved with a team of young talents like Mario Gomez. Veh’s tactical acumen earned him widespread praise, but the next season saw a sharp decline in form. Stuttgart could not defend their title, and Veh was sacked midway through the campaign. His legacy as a one-season wonder remains etched in German football lore.

  1. Brendan Rodgers (Liverpool, 2013-14)

Brendan Rodgers was the mastermind behind Liverpool’s thrilling 2013-14 Premier League campaign. With Luis Suárez, Daniel Sturridge, and Raheem Sterling forming a devastating attack, Liverpool played some of the most exciting football the league had ever seen. They came agonizingly close to winning the title, only to falter in the final games of the season. The next year, Rodgers couldn’t recapture the same form, and Liverpool finished a disappointing sixth. By October 2015, his time at Anfield was over, leaving fans to wonder what might have been.

  1. George Burley (Ipswich Town, 2000-01)

George Burley’s time at Ipswich Town saw him deliver one of the Premier League’s most surprising success stories. In the 2000-01 season, Burley guided newly-promoted Ipswich to a fifth-place finish, earning a UEFA Cup spot. It was an extraordinary achievement for a club of Ipswich’s size. However, the following season saw the team struggle under the weight of European commitments, and they were relegated. Burley’s departure soon followed, marking the end of a brief but remarkable era.

  1. Steve Coppell (Reading, 2006-07)

Steve Coppell worked wonders with Reading in their debut Premier League season in 2006-07. The team finished an incredible eighth, punching well above their weight with a disciplined and hard-working squad. Coppell’s management earned widespread acclaim, but the magic wore off in the following seasons. Reading were relegated in 2008, and Coppell resigned shortly afterward, cementing his reputation as a one-hit wonder in the Premier League.

  1. Avram Grant (Chelsea, 2007-08)

Finally, there’s Avram Grant, who took Chelsea on an extraordinary ride in the 2007-08 season. After replacing José Mourinho early in the campaign, Grant steered Chelsea to the Champions League final and kept them in the Premier League title race until the very end. His cool demeanor under pressure nearly brought Chelsea the ultimate European glory, but a heartbreaking penalty shootout loss to Manchester United in Moscow denied him the trophy. Despite his achievements, Grant was dismissed at the season’s end, his efforts deemed not quite enough by the Chelsea hierarchy.
