Senate has reacted to the court ruling on Senator Natasha’s suspension and have given conditions for her reinstatement.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the Nigerian Senate has responded to the recent ruling by the Federal High Court in Abuja, which nullified the six-month suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and ordered her immediate reinstatement.

While acknowledging the judgment, the Senate emphasized that it will not act on the reinstatement directive until the senator fulfills specific conditions outlined by the court.

In a statement issued by Senate spokesperson, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, the upper legislative chamber maintained that the court did not strip it of its constitutional authority to discipline its members. Although the court questioned the duration of the suspension, it affirmed the Senate’s power to sanction lawmakers who violate its rules.

“The judgment clearly stated that the Senate retains the statutory right to punish any erring senator,” Adaramodu noted. “It was established that Senator Natasha erred, and the court has directed her to take corrective actions before any further steps can be taken.”

According to the Senate, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan must first comply with the court’s finding that she was in contempt. The conditions for compliance include issuing a formal public apology in two national newspapers and on her official Facebook page, as well as paying a fine of ₦5 million.

Only upon meeting these requirements will the Senate reconvene to reassess her case and decide on the next course of action.

“The ball is now in her court. The first move must come from her. Once she fulfils the court’s directives, the Senate will then evaluate her restitution and make a decision,” Adaramodu added.

The Senate reiterated that it respects the judiciary but will follow due process in handling disciplinary matters within its ranks.
