Queen Elizabeth: Osinbajo Departs Nigeria To Represent Buhari At Royal Burial

The Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, will depart Abuja for London to represent President Muhammadu Buhari at a number of events on Sunday and Monday, including the State funeral for Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom.

Newsonline reports that the vice president will return to the country on Monday after the burial ceremony of the longest-servicing head of state and royal of the British ancient stool.

This was contained in a statement released by the vice presidential Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande, on Saturday.

“Prof. Osinbajo departs Abuja today and will join members of the Royal Family, world leaders – including members of the Commonwealth, Heads of State, Governors-General, Prime Ministers, and foreign royal families – at the ceremonies, including the funeral service scheduled to hold at Westminster Abbey on Monday,” a statement read.

Akande also disclosed, “Ahead of the funeral service, the Vice President will be among guests and dignitaries to be received by King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla, at a reception in Buckingham Palace on Sunday.

“Earlier on that day, the VP will hold a bilateral meeting with the UK Foreign Secretary, James Cleverly.”

Queen Elizabeth II, 96, passed away on September 8, 2022 at the Balmoral Castle in Scotland, the United Kingdom.

Until her demise, she was the Head of the Commonwealth and the longest-serving British monarch, reigning for 70 years.

The death of Queen Elizabeth has revived questions among young African citizens about the role of the longest-serving British monarch in the continent’s colonialism.

Calls have also grown in Africa for reparation of all the British empire took from African nations in the course of the colonization.

Among the British, calls have also risen for the abolishment of the century-long royal system.
