President Muhammadu Buhari has blamed the political instability in the North African country of Libya for the banditry ravaging the country.

Newsonline reports that President Buhari also disclosed that the Libya instability was also responsible for the high rate of terrorism in West and Central African regions.

President Buhari stated this while receiving the letters of credence from the new Canadian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Ambassador James Kingston Christoff and Ambassador of Mexico to Nigeria, Juan Alfred Miranda Oritz, at the State House in Abuja, on Tuesday.

The president used the opportunity to reassure the international community that his administration is putting every effort to get the country rid of banditry and terrorism.

The Nigerian president, Muhammadu Buhari also called on the government of Canada and the international communities to join hands with the country in the fight against terrorism and banditry.

Buhari said efforts recorded by the country in its fight against terror groups and bandits was possible through friendly relationships between the country, Canada and Mexico.

President Buhari said, “The political instability in Libya continues to fuel terrorism in the Sahel, West and Central African regions.

“Nigeria is not left out of the equation as we are fighting to rid our country of banditry, kidnapping, herder/farmer clashes and insurgency.

“We are, however, making meaningful progress with the support of friendly countries like yours to sustain this fight until we overcome these challenges.”

Nigeria has been bedeviled by the activities of bandits, with lives and properties lost every week to the attacks of bandits. Most villages in the Northern part of Nigeria have been sacked by bandits.
