Osun LG Election

Police have ordered the immediate suspension of the Osun LG Election scheduled for Saturday.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has called for the immediate suspension of the local government elections in Osun State.

The police gave the order in a statement signed by spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi on Friday night.

The elections are scheduled to be held on Saturday, February 22 across 30 LGAs and 323 wards in the state.

According to intelligence reports, various groups, including political actors, are planning to cause unrest, disrupt public peace, and destabilize the state if the elections proceed.

The NPF warned that going ahead with the polls under these conditions could lead to widespread violence, putting lives and property at risk.

While security agencies are on high alert and ready to respond, the police believe suspending the elections is the best way to prevent clashes and maintain order.

According to the police, aside from security concerns, legal issues have also been raised.

The Attorney-General of the Federation clarified that a Court of Appeal ruling on February 10, 2025, overturned an earlier Federal High Court decision.

Given both security and legal concerns, the NPF has urged the Osun State Government to halt the elections immediately.

The police reaffirmed their commitment to protecting lives, maintaining law and order, and ensuring the democratic process is upheld.

Political parties and stakeholders were also advised to act responsibly and prioritize public safety.
