Peter Obi
NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has paid heartfelt tribute to the late former President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, recalling a personal encounter during his campaign trail that left a lasting impression.
Speaking to journalists during the Third Day Prayers held in honour of the former leader, Obi described Buhari as a man deeply committed to the welfare of the poor. He recounted a memorable moment when Buhari urged him to “please care for poor Nigerians,” a message Obi says continues to resonate with him.
“I had the opportunity to meet the late Muhammadu Buhari while I was campaigning. I still remember his words clearly. He told me, ‘please care for the poor Nigerians.’ That is something I will never forget. I believe he gave his best within the limits of his capacity,” Obi stated.
Reflecting on Buhari’s legacy, Obi emphasized the importance of selfless service and humility among public office holders. “We all must learn how to serve this country, knowing that one day we will return to our Creator,” he said.
He further described Buhari’s life as one marked by simplicity and sincerity, particularly in his consistent appeal to uplift the underprivileged. “His genuine concern for the poor defined him. He lived a life of simplicity and duty,” Obi added.
Recall that President Bola Tinubu and other top government officials received Buhari’s remains at the Katsina International Airport on Tuesday. The former president was then transported to his hometown of Daura, where he was laid to rest with full state honours in accordance with Islamic rites.
Buhari passed away on Sunday at a hospital in London following a brief illness. Thousands of mourners gathered at his Daura residence to pay their last respects to the former military head of state and two-time Nigerian president.
