NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the Labour Party (LP) has elected Nenadi Usman as its National Chairman at the party’s national convention held on Tuesday in Umuahia, Abia State.
With her emergence, Usman becomes the first woman to be elected National Chairman of a political party in Nigeria, marking a historic milestone in the country’s political landscape.
Usman had earlier been appointed to lead the party’s National Caretaker Committee on September 4, 2024, following a leadership vacuum created by the expiration of the previous National Working Committee’s tenure. She subsequently navigated the party through a period of internal crisis, with her leadership affirmed by both the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal.
A former Minister of Finance and senator, Usman brings extensive experience to the role as she assumes the task of repositioning the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had earlier recognised her as Chairman of the Caretaker Committee following a Federal High Court judgement delivered on January 21, 2026, a decision later upheld by the appellate court on April 21, 2026.
In her acceptance speech, Usman thanked party members for their confidence and pledged to strengthen unity, peace, and internal cohesion within the party. She also committed to building on the party’s strong performance in the 2023 general elections to enhance its competitiveness in future polls.
Usman commended Abia State Governor Alex Otti for his support, assuring members of her dedication to the party’s growth and success.
In his remarks, Otti urged the newly elected leadership to provide purposeful direction and deepen the party’s structures across the country.
Other members elected into the National Working Committee include Iheanacho Obioma as National Secretary, Nike Oriola as Deputy National Chairman, Ken Eluma Asogwa as National Publicity Secretary, Oluchi Oparah as National Organising Secretary, Anslem Eragbe as National Financial Secretary, and Hilda Dokubo as National Women Leader.
The newly elected National Working Committee was formally sworn in at the convention, setting the stage for the party’s next phase of political engagement.
