Peter Obi has decried democratic decline under Tinubu and hinted at 2027 presidential bid.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has raised alarm over what he describes as the collapse of democratic governance in Nigeria under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, citing recent political developments in Edo and Rivers states as evidence.

In a recent interview with Arise Television, Obi declared: “There is no democracy in Nigeria today.” He pointed to the disputed governorship primaries in Edo State and what he termed the unconstitutional political interference in Rivers State as clear signs of a faltering democratic process.

President Tinubu had earlier declared a state of emergency in Rivers State to stave off a political crisis stemming from a power tussle between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. In a controversial move, Tinubu suspended the governor, his deputy, and the entire state House of Assembly for six months, subsequently appointing a Sole Administrator to oversee the state.

Obi strongly criticized the move, arguing that the appointment was undemocratic and lacked constitutional legitimacy. “You cannot solve a problem in a democracy by circumventing the rules. Democracy is rooted in law and due process,” he said.

When asked about his political future, Obi hinted at a renewed bid for the presidency in 2027, expressing his unwavering commitment to rebuilding Nigeria on democratic principles. “I am committed to a better Nigeria. I have what it takes; the experience, the record, and the vision. Among all those aspiring for leadership, no one has my background,” he stated confidently.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that Peter Obi, who served as governor of Anambra State and boasts a solid track record in both governance and the corporate sector, emphasized that his ambition is driven by a desire to restore democratic values and deliver effective leadership.
