Opinion: The Book of Infamy and the Abuse of Power Against the Nigerian Press

Journalists are not enemies of government, nor are they touts to be intimidated at will.

The International Press Institute’s Book of Infamy is a welcome and timely intervention in the ongoing struggle to protect press freedom and curb the excesses of public officials in Nigeria. In a democracy, the media serves as the watchdog of society, and any attempt to silence it is an attack on the rights of citizens to information.

The appearance of the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun; the Governor of Niger State, Mohammed Umaru Bago; and the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno, in the Book of Infamy did not come as a surprise. Rather, it reflects a disturbing pattern of intolerance, abuse of power, and disregard for democratic norms.

In the case of the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, there have been repeated reports of journalists being arrested and detained without trial for simply carrying out their professional duties. Journalists have been harassed for reporting stories considered unfavourable to those in authority. Such actions amount to intimidation and undermine freedom of expression, a right guaranteed by the Nigerian Constitution.

Equally troubling is the conduct of the Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago. The reported shutdown of a radio station in Minna without due process represents a grave abuse of executive power. The station’s offence was offering a civic opinion—advising the governor to redirect funds meant for a flyover project toward providing potable water for citizens. Instead of engaging constructively with the suggestion, the governor allegedly ordered the station’s closure and began harassing its journalists. Despite several attempts to resolve the matter amicably, the harassment reportedly continues. This is not only undemocratic but also deeply uncivilised.

The situation in Akwa Ibom State further reinforces concerns about shrinking press freedom. Governor Umo Eno reportedly ordered the reassignment of Channels Television reporters attached to the Government House after they broadcast statements he personally made. Apparently displeased that the information reached the public, the governor reacted by replacing the journalists. This act reflects intolerance for transparency and reveals a worrying, power-drunk mentality.

Journalists are not enemies of government, nor are they touts to be intimidated at will. They are trained professionals who perform an essential public service by informing citizens and holding leaders accountable. Any society that mistreats its journalists is laying the foundation for tyranny.

Enough is enough of public officials behaving like demi-gods, intoxicated by power and shielded by authority. The Book of Infamy should serve as a mirror to those in power, reminding them that history records both actions and abuses. Perhaps this international exposure will compel them to retrace their steps, respect the rule of law, and allow journalists to perform their legitimate duties without fear or intimidation.
