OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Atlas AI-Powered web browser to rival Google.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that artificial intelligence company OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, has officially launched ChatGPT Atlas, a next-generation AI-powered web browser that seamlessly integrates its popular chatbot into the browsing experience.

The new browser, unveiled on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, is now available for Apple’s macOS, with plans to expand to Windows, iOS, and Android soon. The move marks OpenAI’s formal entry into the web browser market, positioning Atlas as a direct competitor to Google Chrome, the world’s dominant browser.

According to OpenAI, Atlas eliminates the traditional address bar and places ChatGPT at the core of the browsing experience, offering users what it calls a “super-assistant” interface.

“Today we’re introducing ChatGPT Atlas — a new web browser built with ChatGPT at its core,” OpenAI said in its announcement. “A browser built with ChatGPT takes us closer to a true super-assistant that understands your world and helps you achieve your goals.”

With Atlas, users can chat directly with ChatGPT while navigating web pages. The AI can analyze site content, summarize information, and assist with searches — all without needing to switch tabs or copy-paste text.

The browser also includes an Agent Mode for ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Business users, enabling the assistant to perform real-time searches, automate tasks, and analyze data based on the user’s browsing context.

A standout feature of Atlas is browser memory, allowing ChatGPT to retain relevant context from visited websites and recall it when needed.

“As you use Atlas, ChatGPT can get smarter and more helpful,” OpenAI explained. “Users can control what is stored, delete history, and opt out of memory entirely.”

The browser supports all ChatGPT plans Free, Plus, Pro, and Go while Business, Enterprise, and Education users can access a beta version managed by organization administrators.

The launch of Atlas intensifies competition in the AI-powered search and browsing space, currently dominated by Google.

Google Chrome holds a 71.9% global market share as of September 2025 (StatCounter), while the tech giant continues integrating its Gemini AI model into Chrome’s AI Mode for U.S. users.

Industry analysts see OpenAI’s move as a major disruption.

“Integrating chat into a browser is a precursor for OpenAI to start selling ads,” said Gil Luria, analyst at D.A. Davidson. “Once OpenAI monetizes search, it could significantly cut into Google’s advertising dominance.”

A recent U.S. court ruling allowed Google to retain control of Chrome, letting it continue paying partners to promote its search engine — a practice OpenAI’s innovation could now challenge.

The release of Atlas comes amid OpenAI’s broader expansion strategy to monetize AI technology and strengthen its infrastructure for global growth.

At the recent OpenAI DevDay, CEO Sam Altman revealed that ChatGPT now has 800 million weekly active users, doubling from 400 million in February 2025.

OpenAI has also made several strategic acquisitions this year:

  • Acquired Windsurf (formerly Codeium) in a $3 billion deal to enhance its AI coding tools.

  • Bought Statsig, a product-testing startup, in a $1.1 billion stock deal, appointing founder Vijaye Raji as Chief Technology Officer of Applications.

  • Signed a $300 billion, five-year cloud deal with Oracle, securing 4.5 gigawatts of computing power to train and run large AI models.

Getting Started

Mac users can now download ChatGPT Atlas and sign in with their existing OpenAI account. The browser supports importing bookmarks, passwords, and browsing history from Chrome, Safari, or Edge for a smooth transition.

“Getting started is easy,” OpenAI said. “When you open Atlas, sign in to ChatGPT, and bring your bookmarks and browsing history with you.”

As OpenAI sets its sights on revolutionizing how people interact with the web, Atlas could redefine browsing as not just a search experience — but an intelligent, conversational partnership.
