OPay has debunked viral claims of wiped accounts, lost deposits, and shutdown.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that Fintech giant OPay has firmly dismissed viral social media rumours alleging that customer accounts were wiped, deposits vanished, or that the company had ceased operations.

In a statement posted on its official X handle on Friday, the payment company described the circulating claims as “false, malicious, and misleading.”

“Our attention has been drawn to false, malicious, and misleading rumours in the media and on social platforms claiming that customer accounts have been wiped out, deposits lost, and operations shut down. These claims are entirely false, misleading and fabricated,” OPay stated.

The firm assured users that all accounts remain safe, secure, and fully accessible, adding that it continues to operate smoothly and remains financially stable.

The statement emphasised that OPay is a fully regulated entity.

“As a licensed institution regulated by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), with customer deposits insured by the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC), OPay maintains strict adherence to regulatory standards, transparency, and customer protection,” the company said.

OPay also issued a stern warning to individuals and platforms spreading the false claims, hinting at potential legal steps.

“We urge anyone spreading such claims to come forward, and anyone with verifiable proof that funds were removed from their accounts without their authorisation to present it. OPay will pursue appropriate legal action against perpetrators spreading these false rumours and fabricated claims,” the company cautioned.

Customers were advised to rely solely on official communication from OPay’s verified channels.

The clarification follows temporary access issues experienced by some users on Tuesday, a brief system disruption that was resolved within minutes.

OPay reiterated that it remains committed to offering secure, reliable, and innovative financial services, urging the public to disregard unverified online posts.
