Northern Governors is currently holding an emergency meeting in Kaduna to address rising insecurity.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that Governors of the 19 Northern states are convening in Kaduna to address the escalating wave of kidnapping, banditry, and other security challenges across the region.

The meeting, primarily focused on tackling the surge in insecurity, brings together governors including Uba Sani (Kaduna), Abubakar Sani Bello (Niger), Inuwa Yahaya (Gombe), Umar Namadi (Jigawa), Dauda Lawal (Zamfara), Mai Mala Buni (Yobe), Nasir Idris (Kebbi), Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), and Abdullahi Sule (Nasarawa), with several states represented by their deputies.

Traditional rulers, including the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Saad Abubakar III, are also participating in the emergency session held at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim Government House in Kaduna on Monday.

While official statements are yet to be released, sources indicate that the governors are deliberating on critical regional security concerns, particularly the recent spike in kidnappings and bandit attacks.

Reports from The PUNCH note that the North has recently seen increased attacks on schools, prompting some state governments to temporarily close educational institutions.

Last week, armed assailants raided Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State, abducting at least 24 schoolgirls and killing the vice principal.

A few days later, gunmen attacked St. Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary Schools in Papiri, Niger State, abducting over 300 students and staff, though about 50 students later managed to escape.

The emergency meeting aims to formulate coordinated strategies to curb the rising insecurity and protect communities, schools, and critical infrastructure across Northern Nigeria.
