Top Nigerian Newspaper Headlines And Naija News For Wednesday, 17th May 2023.

 

1. Some staff of the United States Embassy in Nigeria have been shot dead in Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State. Sources said that the convoy of the embassy officials came under fire as they were passing through the area.

2. President Muhammadu Buhari, on Tuesday, returned to Nigeria after an extended trip to London. The President arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja around 4:45 pm.

3. Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, says President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration created 12 million new jobs in agriculture alone. Shehu, in a television interview, said the administration did well in many sectors, including security, power, anti-corruption, among others.

4. President-elect, Bola Tinubu has met with Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, one of his opponents in the February 25, 2023 elections. Kwankwaso, who ran on the platform of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), placed fourth in the election, winning only Kano State, a stronghold of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

5. Nigeria needs $12bn to clean up decades-old oil spills in southern Bayelsa State over a 12-year period, a new report revealed on Tuesday, as it singled out two international oil companies, Shell and Eni, for being responsible for most of the pollution.

6. The National Chairman of All Progressives Congress, Abdullahi Adamu, has advised the party’s endorsed aspirants for the National Assembly leadership positions to be mindful of an upset during the inauguration of the 10th legislature. Adamu, during a meeting with Senator Godswill Akpabio and Deputy Senate Presidential aspirant, Jibrin Barau, urged them to arrive early for the inauguration on June 13.

7. The Federal Government, on Tuesday, advised the incoming administration of the President-elect, Bola Tinubu, to strengthen anti-corruption and reform-minded agencies to effectively contribute to robust economic and public finance. The Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, said this in Abuja.

8. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has confirmed the arrest of two of its officials, Apata Odunayo and Ogbuji Tochukwu, who were allegedly involved in a scuffle that led to the death of a cadet in the Sokoto Zonal Command of the anti-graft commission, Abel Isah. The suspects have been dragged before a Chief Magistrates’ Court, Gwiwa in Sokoto for criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide.

9. The President-elect, Bola Tinubu, and the Vice President-elect, Kashim Shettima, have urged the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) to dismiss the application by Atiku Abubakar and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for a live broadcast of proceedings. Tinubu and Shettma described the application as frivolous and a bid to waste the court’s time.

10. President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has promised that women would be properly represented in his administration. Tinubu, who was represented by the National Women Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Betta Edu, at a book presentation in Abuja, said Nigerian women have paid the price for the development, peace and unity of Nigeria.
