Top Nigerian Newspaper Headlines And Naija News For Tuesday, 23 May 2023.

 

1. The Federal Government may save about N35tn in fiscal expenditure within the next five years with the commencement of operations at the Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals. The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, disclosed this on Monday during the ceremony to inaugurate the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemical facility in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos.

2. The Presidential Election Petition Court on Monday refused a request for a live broadcast of its proceedings, stating that the application lacked merit. The five-member panel of the court headed by Justice Haruna Tsammani, held that Nigeria’s judicial policies and legislative framework had no place for live telecast of court sessions.

3. The All Progressive Congress and its standard bearer, Bola Tinubu, on Monday, rejected the proposal to consolidate the three surviving petitions being heard at the Presidential Election Petition Court wherein the outcome of the February 25 presidential election is being challenged.

4. There is tight security in Daura, hometown of President Muhammadu Buhari in Katsina State, ahead of his return. Buhari, who will exit power next week upon the completion of his second term in office, is expected to return to Daura after handing over to President-elect Bola Tinubu.

5. Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State has approved the deposition of the traditional rulers of Piriga and Arak Chiefdoms, His Highness, Jonathan Paragua Zamuna and His Highness, General Aliyu Iliyah Yammah (retd.), with immediate effect. The state Commissioner for Local Government, Hajiya Umma Ahmad, disclosed this in a statement on Monday.

6. President of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, on Monday, said President Muhammadu Buhari stopped him from quitting the establishment of Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals, the world’s largest single-train refinery. Dangote who disclosed this during the commissioning of the project in Lagos, said Buhari’s support over the past eight years have been a source of great motivation.

7. The Supreme Court has scheduled judgment for Friday, May 26 in the appeal by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) which is among others, seeking to void the joint ticket of the President-elect and Vice President-elect, Bola Tinubu and Kashim Shettima of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

8. Eighteen years after its conception, the Second Niger Bridge will be inaugurated today, Tuesday, by President Muhammadu Buhari. Six other legacy projects – the two remaining sections of the Abuja-Kano Expressway; Loko-Oweto Bridge and federal secretariats in Awka (Anambra); Gusau (Zamfara) and Yenagoa (Bayelsa) are also listed for virtual inauguration by the President.

9. Men of the Benue State Police Command have rescued 10 kidnap victims, including a medical doctor, Etito Obadiah. Obadiah, who works at the Federal Medical Centre, Makurdi, was rescued on Monday by policemen.

10. The Management of the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State has dismissed 13 academic and non-academic staff members for offences ranging from falsified age, fraud, gross misconduct to extortion and sexual harassment. The institution’s acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Asomwan Adagbonyin, said the decision was based on the recommendations of the University Staff Disciplinary Committee.
