Latest COVID-19 Fourth Wave News in Nigeria Today, 22nd December 2021 has emerged.

 

 

NewsOnline reports that Nigeria recorded a total of 2,123 new cases of the covid-19 on 21st December 2021, taking the total tally to 227,297 from inception to date. This is according to the daily update of the NCDC.

The number of cases recorded on Tuesday, NewsOnline undeerstands, represents a 55% increase compared to 1,368 recorded on Monday, 20th December 2021. This is also the highest daily number of cases recorded in the country.

 

 

So far in the week, a total of 3,895 new cases of the covid-19 has been recorded in the country with the number of active cases hitting 12,547, which is the highest in almost four months.

According to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, a total of 2,989 deaths have been recorded, while 211,761 patients have been discharged. It is worth noting that about 3.75 million tests have been carried out in Nigeria.

 

A breakdown of the 2,123 cases shows that Lagos State led the pack with 1,552 new cases followed by Abuja with 197 cases. Others on the list include; Edo (155), Rivers (81), Delta (44), Plateau (33), Kwara (30), Kano (16), Enugu (12), Gombe (2) and Bauchi (1).

 

Meanwhile, Nigeria currently ranks 8th on the list of highest number of cases in Africa, following the likes of Kenya and Egypt with 267,571 and 377,081 cases respectively.

 

What this means

This sudden surge in the number of daily cases in Nigeria especially at a time when Omicron virus is spreading across major European countries leading to movement restrictions, could cause to some form of movement restrictions. With the yuletide already around the corner, an uncontrolled spread of the virus could be counterproductive for the recovering economy.
