Jonathan Camp Courts Kwankwaso in Alliance Talks Ahead of 2027 Elections

Highly placed sources confirmed to Vanguard that emissaries of the former president have already met with Kwankwaso’s representatives, with both camps tabling what one insider described as “minimal demands” to advance the conversation.

Jonathan camp is reportedly courting Kwankwaso in alliance talks ahead of 2027 elections.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that fresh permutations are unfolding in the build-up to the 2027 general elections, as former President Goodluck Jonathan’s camp has opened discreet talks with former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, over a possible alliance.

Highly placed sources confirmed to Vanguard that emissaries of the former president have already met with Kwankwaso’s representatives, with both camps tabling what one insider described as “minimal demands” to advance the conversation.

According to sources familiar with the negotiations, Kwankwaso’s team has insisted on securing the vice-presidential slot in any potential deal.

“While Jonathan’s strategists are not outrightly dismissing Kwankwaso’s demands, no firm decision has been taken yet,” the source revealed. “Other options, including the consideration of a younger northern governor to capture the youth vote, remain on the table.”

The greater dilemma for Jonathan, however, lies in choosing a viable political platform. Both the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) appear open to his comeback bid, but internal divisions in the two parties could complicate matters.

Within the PDP, some leaders have thrown their weight behind Jonathan’s return. But entrenched interests loyal to Nyesom Wike now aligned with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) are said to be strongly opposed.

In the ADC, Jonathan commands significant loyalty, with party figures positioning him as their preferred standard-bearer. Yet, concerns linger as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is also believed to be eyeing the ticket, setting the stage for possible clashes.

A close ally admitted Jonathan is navigating a delicate balance. “Jonathan is both optimistic and cautious about his chances in the PDP and the ADC. Some of his rivals still maintain strong influence in both parties, making it difficult for him to settle,” the ally disclosed.

While the ADC, now under the recognised leadership of David Mark, remains a fallback option, Jonathan’s emotional and historical ties to the PDP could ultimately guide his decision.

“It is true that the ADC is populated largely by Jonathan’s loyalists, but the PDP still holds his deepest political sentiments,” another source said. “Despite the turbulence, he may eventually pitch his tent with the PDP, especially since many who defected did so in protest of Wike’s control of the party structure.”
