Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi has described the closure of schools in the country’s capital, Abuja, by the Federal government as worrisome and depressing.

Newsonline reports that Peter Obi said it was the duty of the Buhari-led administration to ensure the security of lives and particularly students.

Peter Obi stated that the high rate of insecurity in the country that has led to the closure of schools by the Federal government in the country’s capital calls for action to save Nigerians.

Peter Obi stated this while reacting to the Federal government’s decision to close all Unity Colleges and schools in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria.

The Federal government took the action on 25 July, citing insecurity and threats by bandits to abduct students in the capital territory.

Peter Obi said, “the proposed closure of some schools in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, is not only worrisome but depressing.

“The government, in keeping to its duties of protecting the lives of citizens, must be proactive in its actions.

“I urge the government to do all within its power to arrest the high level of insecurity in the nation, to enable our students safely return to schools, and for our nation to return to the part of progress.”

Bandits have targeted Nigerian students in the last three years of President Buhari’s administration. The act has resulted in a high number of out-of-school children.

This is particularly in the Northern states of Zamfara, Kaduna, Katsina, Yobe, and Borno.
