NG-CARES Social Intervention Programme

House has launched investigation into N1.06 trillion NG-CARES Social Intervention Programme.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the House of Representatives has commenced an investigation into the N1.06 trillion Nigeria Community Action for Resilience and Economic Stimulus (NG-CARES) social intervention programme, amid concerns that Nigerians are not feeling the impact of the funds.

Chairman of the House Committee on NG-CARES, Rep. Abubakar Kusada (APC–Katsina), disclosed this while briefing journalists in Abuja on Wednesday.

Kusada explained that although the Federal Government has met its funding obligations and released over $696 million (equivalent to N1.06 trillion) to support social safety nets and palliatives across the 36 states and the FCT, many vulnerable Nigerians have yet to benefit from the programme.

“It is most surprising that the effect of these palliatives is not being felt by the target groups after the government has committed significant resources through the states,” Kusada said, noting continued public outcry over perceived government neglect.

Verification of States’ Claims

The committee, exercising its constitutional powers under Sections 88 and 89, aims to unravel the disconnect and ensure the proper expenditure of funds. Kusada stated that several states had claimed billions of naira for social transfers, agricultural inputs, labour, infrastructure, asset procurement, and development or upgrading of wet markets and storage facilities.

“If we verify these claims, we will disclose their impact on food supply, prices, and the plight of ordinary Nigerians. If claims cannot be verified, the affected states will be named and required to make restitution,” he said.

The investigation will also examine grants and support provided to micro and small enterprises (MSEs) intended to stimulate economic recovery and resilience.

Concerns Over Mismanagement of Funds

Kusada alleged that billions of naira meant to support small businesses may have been misapplied, undermining the programme’s objectives of providing social safety nets and improving the economic well-being of citizens.

He warned that any diversion or misuse of funds would be exposed, with responsible parties held accountable. Additionally, any irregularities in procurement processes will be referred to the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) and relevant anti-graft agencies for action.

The investigation seeks to bridge the gap between government interventions and the tangible impact on Nigerians, ensuring transparency and accountability in the implementation of NG-CARES.
