NewsOnline reports that Saturday’s Governorship/Assembly elections promise to be an epic battle between candidates of the various parties across the country.
Only 28 out of the 36 states in the federation will be participating in the elections.
Political pundits anticipate an epic battle between the APC and the main challengers; the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP).

But in some states, the Labour Party and its candidates have stepped down and anointed other candidates from PDP and APC.
Here are Governorship candidates supported by Labour Party in some States:
Labour Party Governorship candidate steps down for Binani of APC
The candidate of the Labour Party in Adamawa State, Umar Mustapha Madawaki stepped down for senator Aishatu Binani.
He announced the collapse of all his party structures to the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Binani.
Speaking at a press conference in Yola, the Labour party Governorship candidate directed all his supporters across the 21 local governments of the state to come out in their numbers and vote for APC gubernatorial candidate.
Oyo LP candidate kicks as party adopts Makinde
Leaders of Labour Party (LP) in Oyo State dumped the party’s governorship candidate, Tawfiq Akinwale, and adopted Governor Seyi Makinde of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for Saturday’s governorship election in the state.
However, Akinwale has said he has not stepped down for Makinde despite the position of his party’s leaders.
The chairperson of LP in the state, Atayase Sadiq, said the decision was made after consultation with members of the party across the state’s 33 local government areas.
Nasarawa LP gov candidate steps down
Some members of the Labour Party led (Nasarawa chapter) by its house of representatives candidate Rev. Anga Kuje Solomon rejected the reported step-down of its candidate, Joseph Ewuga, for the candidate of the PDP in the upcoming governorship election.
The party noted that if the reported step-down Ewuga is true, then it is strictly a personal decision.
Ewuga had shelved his ambition and declared support for the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, David Ombugadu.
Speaking in the Akwanga Local Government Area on Wednesday, Ewuga said he stepped down to boost the chances of the PDP candidate.
While appealing to his supporters to vote for the PDP candidate, Ewuga expressed confidence in the leadership qualities of Ombugadu to take Nasarawa State to greater heights.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Labour Party in Nasarawa State, Alexander Emmanuel Ombugu denied endorsing the candidature of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Governorship candidate, Abdullahi Sule, for a second term in office.
Rivers Labour Party chairman endorses PDP governorship candidate
The Labour Party Chairman in Rivers State, Dienye Pepple, has said his party had resolved to support the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.
LP dumped its governorship candidate, Beatrice Itubo and endorsed Siminialayi Fubara of PDP.
Pepple said the party endorsed a “credible candidate” irrespective of party affiliation in the state.
According to him, the candidate to be voted for must be young, vibrant and must hail from the senatorial district that hasn’t produced a governor.
Kwara Labour Party Guber Candidate Steps Down
Comrade Basambo Abubakar, the governorship candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in Kwara State stepped down for his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) counterpart, Shuaib Abdullahi Yaman.
He said his decision was to form a stronger alliance with the PDP and wrest power from the APC administration.
Abubakar, a former aide to former Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, had said that the union was expected to birth a collective dream for a prosperous Kwara State.
The LP flag bearer said the APC administration had performed below expectation and could not deliver “greater Kwara of our dream”.
But the Labour Party leadership in Kwara State the following day, announced the suspension of Abubakar over his romance with PDP.
Ogun Labour Party adopts Abiodun as candidate
The Labour Party (LP) in Ogun State has endorsed and adopted the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial candidate and the incumbent Governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun for another term of four years in office.
Speaking when he led the state executive members of the Labour Party to the governor’s residence at Iperu-Remo, the state chairman of the party, Michael Ashade, disclosed that the good works of the governor and the need to sustain them till 2027 informed the party’s decision to throw its weight behind the him.
Meanwhile, another faction of the Labour Party in Ogun State faulted the endorsement of Abiodun for a second term. The party said the governor was endorsed by suspended members of the party.
The party in the statement signed by the Publicity Secretary of the Caretaker Committee in the state, Tokunbo Peters described the endorsement as misleading.
Abiodun had been endorsed by the state chairman, Michael Ashade and the National Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Arabambi who were said to have been suspended by the national leadership of the party.
The Independent National Electoral Commission had excluded the name of the governorship candidate of the party in the state, Kehinde Sogunle due to a court case.
