FIRS has formally become Nigeria Revenue Service and unveiled a new logo.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has officially rebranded as the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), unveiling a new corporate identity as Nigeria prepares to transition into a new tax regime scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2026.

The new name and logo were unveiled on Wednesday in Abuja by the Executive Chairman of the NRS, Mr Zacch Adedeji, marking a major institutional shift in Nigeria’s revenue administration framework.

The rebranding follows the enactment of the Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Act, 2025, which was signed into law by President Bola Tinubu in June 2025. With the passage of the Act, the NRS has formally replaced the FIRS as Nigeria’s central revenue authority, with an expanded mandate under the country’s sweeping tax reform programme.

Speaking at the unveiling, Adedeji said the new identity represents a strategic repositioning of Nigeria’s revenue administration system to align with the country’s economic transformation goals.

According to a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media, Dare Adekanmbi, Adedeji said the rebrand reflects a renewed focus on efficiency, service delivery, and global best practices.

“The unveiling of the NRS identity reflects a renewed commitment to a more unified, efficient, and service-oriented revenue system, one that is aligned with Nigeria’s economic transformation agenda and global best practices,” he said.

Adedeji described the new logo and brand elements as a significant milestone in the evolution of Nigeria’s revenue administration architecture, noting that the rebrand signals continuity rather than disruption.

He said the transition to NRS underscores strengthened institutional capacity and a forward-looking approach to supporting taxpayers and national development, especially as Nigeria implements far-reaching tax reforms.

The NRS boss further assured Nigerians that transparency, collaboration, and service delivery would remain central to the agency’s operations.

“The Nigeria Revenue Service remains committed to transparency, partnership, and service excellence. The unveiling of this new identity represents not an end, but the beginning of a strengthened relationship between the revenue authority and the Nigerian public—built on trust, clarity, and shared prosperity,” the statement added.

The rebranding comes amid ongoing public debate surrounding Nigeria’s newly enacted tax laws. President Tinubu has repeatedly reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to implementing the reforms as scheduled, dismissing calls for their suspension.

While some provisions of the tax laws took effect on June 26, 2025, others are set to commence on January 1, 2026. According to the President, the reforms are critical to rebuilding Nigeria’s fiscal framework and are designed to promote fairness, competitiveness, and long-term economic sustainability—not to impose additional burdens on citizens.

What you should know

As part of the new tax framework:

  • The National Identification Number (NIN) issued by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) now automatically serves as a Tax Identification Number (Tax ID) for individual Nigerians.

  • For registered businesses, the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) registration number automatically becomes their Tax ID under the new tax system.

The developments signal a major shift in Nigeria’s tax administration as the country moves toward a more integrated, technology-driven, and compliance-focused revenue system ahead of 2026.
