₦1.5 Trillion Kano Light Rail Project

FG has approved ₦1.5 trillion Kano Light Rail Project to boost urban transport.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the Federal Government has finalized plans to construct a ₦1.5 trillion light rail line in Kano metropolis, aimed at transforming the city’s transport system and driving economic growth in northern Nigeria.

Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation, Rep. Abubakar Kabir Bichi, made the disclosure on Thursday during a press briefing in Kano. He confirmed that the Kano Metropolis Light Rail Project, valued at $1 billion (approximately ₦1.5 trillion), is already in the procurement stage.

“This project will significantly ease transportation challenges and add immense economic value to the state when completed,” Bichi said, noting the parallels with similar transit systems in Europe and Asia.

The development is seen as part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s infrastructure push, despite recent criticisms alleging neglect of the northern region. Bichi dismissed such claims as “baseless.”

“As Chairman of Appropriation, I can confidently say the President has invested heavily in the North,” he added.

Key Ongoing Projects in the North:

  • Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Road – near completion

  • Kaduna-Abuja Highway (400km) – contract re-awarded; new contractor mobilized

  • Kano-Hadejia Road (200km) – completed

  • Kano Northern Bypass – ongoing, valued at over ₦250 billion

Bichi also stated he was in Kano for an APC stakeholders’ meeting ahead of the 2027 general elections, and to express solidarity with former APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje.

“In the last election, Kano delivered over 500,000 votes for President Tinubu the highest from any state. We’re here to plan and support a leader who has delivered results,” Bichi emphasized.
