EPL: Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez Sent Off vs Crystal Palace For Wild Headbutt

Darwin Nunez’s home Premier League debut was certainly not one to remember.

The Uruguayan striker’s first outing in the English top-flight with Liverpool was certainly a good one.

Newsonline report that as he picked up a goal and an assist after coming off the bench in the 2-2 draw versus Fulham last weekend.

But against Crystal Palace at Anfield on the first edition of Monday Night Football in 2022/23, the former Benfica man had an absolute mare – and it was all his own fault.
Nunez was fairly anonymous in the first half, aside from a mishit shot that hit the post, and in the second half, he well and truly let his frustration get the better of him.
With his side 1-0 down thanks to Wilfried Zaha’s opener from a well-executed counterattack, Nunez was inexplicably sent off for headbutting Palace defender Joachim Andersen.

It was a moment of complete madness from the Liverpool forward and the referee had no choice but to dismiss him from the field of play.
That right there is the Oxford dictionary definition of ‘losing your head’.

Whatever Andersen said to Nunez during their rather heated altercation was certainly not worth reacting to with a Zinedine Zidane-esque headbutt.

Nunez is now suspended for three games and will subsequently miss the trip to Manchester United next Monday.

Thankfully for Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool, Luis Diaz was on hand to grab a sensational equaliser against Palace just minutes after they were reduced to 10 men.
The Colombian striker let loose from the edge of the box and his right-footed shot flew past a helpless Vicente Guaita.
With Sadio Mane now at Bayern Munich, Diogo Jota absent through injury and Roberto Firmino out of form, the onus is on Diaz to deliver – and he certainly did just that against Palace.
defeat.

But the Reds will not be happy about the fact they’ve had to settle for two draws in their opening two Premier League matches of the season.

Liverpool now trail Manchester City by four points and such a poor start may come back to haunt them at the very end of the campaign.
