Elon Musk has sparked online debate after saying that money cannot buy happiness.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the world’s richest man, Elon Musk, has reignited debate on social media after sharing his thoughts on the long-running argument that wealth does not guarantee happiness.

The Tesla and SpaceX chief executive made the comment in a short post on Wednesday, writing, “Whoever said ‘money can’t buy happiness’ really knew what they were talking about.”

The remark quickly drew widespread attention, with many users interpreting it as a rare reflection on the emotional limits of extreme wealth. Within hours, the post recorded over 33 million views and more than 245,000 likes, triggering intense discussions about the relationship between financial success and personal well-being.

In Nigeria, the comment resonated with familiar cultural themes, drawing comparisons to Adekunle Gold’s 2021 song It Is What It Is, which explores the realisation that material wealth does not necessarily bring fulfillment. Many users noted that the song’s lyrics mirror the sentiment expressed in Musk’s post.

Online reactions were mixed. Some users agreed with Musk, arguing that while money can ease hardship and provide comfort, it does not automatically resolve emotional or psychological struggles. Others countered that financial stability plays a critical role in reducing stress and improving quality of life, particularly in societies facing economic hardship.

Several commenters also questioned Musk’s perspective, noting that his immense wealth places him far removed from the daily realities of most people. Some suggested that even a small portion of his fortune could significantly improve their happiness and living conditions.

Faith-based views also featured prominently in the discussion, with some users asserting that lasting fulfillment comes from spiritual values and purpose rather than material possessions.

The debate continues to trend online, highlighting enduring questions about wealth, happiness and the true meaning of success.
