Buhari Loyalists have dumped APC and declared support for Atiku ahead of 2027.

 

In a dramatic twist that could reshape Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections, NewsOnline Nigeria reports that a faction of loyalists to former President Muhammadu Buhari has pledged allegiance to ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar, deepening divisions within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The declaration came during a private meeting in Abuja, where state chairmen of the now-defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), Buhari’s original political platform converged at Atiku’s residence.

Atiku, who is spearheading a coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), welcomed the CPC bloc, describing their move as a significant boost to the opposition’s quest to challenge APC’s dominance.

CPC Bloc Turns on APC

The Buhari loyalists accused the current administration of betraying the values that originally united the coalition that swept the APC into power in 2015.

One CPC leader reportedly told Atiku:

“We are the true followers of Buhari, and we are here today, Sir. When this coalition started, we identified early on with the party we wanted to align with. President Buhari has left an unprecedented mark in the history of this country, and we will not allow it to be lost. We are now ready to merge into the new political platform that God has chosen for us, appointing you as the leader, that platform now being the ADC.”

The group also drew sharp contrasts between the Buhari era and the present government, insisting that the APC had strayed from the movement’s founding values.

Atiku Welcomes Alliance

In his remarks, Atiku described the endorsement as a “bold step towards building a formidable coalition” that could challenge APC’s grip on power in 2027.

“I am particularly delighted to receive you today. This meeting represents a continuation of your journey and struggles. With your support, we will be able to translate this journey into success,” Atiku said.

He assured the CPC bloc of inclusivity in the planned coalition, promising a government “responsive to ordinary citizens, and committed to peace, unity, and service.”

The former Vice President also urged the CPC loyalists to mobilize their base for the ongoing voter registration exercise, which he emphasized as critical for the 2027 elections.

Implications for 2027

The defection of Buhari loyalists long considered his most steadfast political base raises serious questions about APC’s internal cohesion, especially in the North, where Buhari’s influence remains unmatched.
