BREAKING: Tinubu Set to Finalize Ambassadorial Appointments After Months of Diplomatic Vacuum

Sources added that while security clearances had been completed months earlier, they now require revalidation following the personnel changes.

President Bola Tinubu

President Tinubu is set to finalize Ambassadorial Appointments after months of diplomatic vacuum.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to conclude the long-delayed appointment of ambassadors to Nigeria’s foreign missions around the world, following months of mounting pressure and a prolonged diplomatic gap in key international capitals.

Multiple sources within the Presidency confirmed to The PUNCH that the President has ordered a final review of the ambassadorial list to reflect updated information before it is made public.

“It’s going to be concluded very soon,” a senior Presidency official said on Monday, November 3. “The exercise is already in its final stage.”

List Under Review After Changes, Deaths, and Retirements

According to insiders, the clean-up became necessary due to several developments since the initial list was transmitted to the Senate for screening.

“Some nominees have died, while others have retired or are no longer eligible for service,” an official revealed.
“Although the Senate screened the earlier nominees, the list must now be updated to reflect those still available and qualified.”

Sources added that while security clearances had been completed months earlier, they now require revalidation following the personnel changes.

Two-Year Diplomatic Void Weakens Nigeria’s Global Presence

The move comes two years after President Tinubu ordered the recall of all ambassadors from Nigeria’s 109 foreign missions — including 76 embassies, 22 high commissions, and 11 consulates — as part of a broad diplomatic reform.

Since then, most missions have been run by chargés d’affaires or senior consular officers, a situation that experts say has weakened Nigeria’s global influence.

“Foreign governments do not accord the same diplomatic weight to chargés d’affaires as they do to ambassadors,” a senior Foreign Service officer explained. “At a time like this, Nigeria needs full-fledged envoys to manage growing diplomatic demands.”

Renewed Urgency Amid Trump’s Threat to Nigeria

The renewed push for appointments follows heightened diplomatic tension after former U.S. President Donald Trump threatened possible military action in Nigeria over alleged killings of Christians.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump warned that the United States might “go into that disgraced country, guns-a-blazing,” if the Nigerian government failed to act.

While Nigerian officials have dismissed the claim as “baseless,” Presidency sources admitted that the absence of ambassadors in key capitals complicated diplomatic communication.

“That’s not to say the lack of ambassadors caused the misunderstanding, but their presence could have made dialogue easier,” one senior aide said. “Foreign partners prefer engaging directly at the ambassadorial level, especially in sensitive situations.”

Foreign Affairs Minister Meets Tinubu Over Final List

Naija News learned that the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, is scheduled to meet President Tinubu at the State House in Abuja on Tuesday, November 3, where the ambassadorial list will top the agenda.

A Presidency source confirmed:

“Once the President approves the list, it will be made public. An official statement is expected soon.”

Earlier reports indicated that the Federal Government had completed vetting of nominees since April 2025 but delayed postings due to budget constraints and the challenge of balancing political representation with merit.

Officials estimate that over $1 billion is needed to settle outstanding foreign mission arrears, renovate embassies, replace official vehicles, and fund operations abroad.

President Tinubu previously acknowledged the difficulty of finalizing the list, noting:

“It’s not easy stitching those names together… I still have ambassadorial slots that many people are clamoring for,” he said in September.

Experts: Move Will Restore Nigeria’s Diplomatic Standing

Diplomats and analysts have hailed the expected announcement as long overdue, saying it will restore Nigeria’s international credibility and strengthen bilateral relations.

“Foreign representation is not just symbolic — it’s strategic,” a former ambassador told The PUNCH. “Deploying ambassadors now will improve Nigeria’s image and reinforce its foreign policy interests.”

As of press time, sources confirmed that the revised ambassadorial list is in its final review stage and could be released within days, signaling the end of a two-year diplomatic vacuum.
