There is heavy police presence across the nation as the protest picks up steam, with many roads deserted.
The ongoing nationwide demonstration against hardship took a dramatic turn in Kano on Thursday morning as some protesters set up a bonfire in front of the Government House.
The protesters, who had converged from different parts of the metropolis, gathered at the Government House, where Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf was expected to address them.
As the crowd approached the gate, a group of demonstrators assembled tyres and set them ablaze, creating a bonfire that heightened the tension at the scene.
In response to the escalating situation, security operatives at the Government House fired gunshots and teargas to disperse the protesters.
The sudden use of force caused the crowd to flee in different directions, leading to confusion and chaos in the vicinity.
Eyewitnesses who spoke with DailyTrust reported that the atmosphere had been relatively calm until the bonfire incident.
“We were waiting peacefully to hear from the governor when suddenly some people started burning tyres,” said Musa Abdullahi, a protester from the Sabon Gari area.
