Peter Obi has escaped assassination attempt by gunmen in Edo State.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, has raised concerns over an alleged attack on former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and members of the movement in Benin City, Edo State.

In a statement issued on Tuesday and titled “Breaking Red Alert in Benin, Edo State,” Tanko alleged that armed individuals opened fire during the formal defection of Olumide Akpata into the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

According to Tanko, the incident occurred shortly after the event at the ADC Secretariat in Benin City. He claimed that the group was trailed by armed men to the residence of former Edo State governor, John Odigie-Oyegun.

“PO and the leadership of the ADC are under siege and attack in Benin, Edo State,” the statement read.

Tanko further alleged that the attackers shot at the gate of the residence and damaged several vehicles, describing the incident as what appeared to be an assassination attempt.

He warned that the development poses a serious threat to democratic processes and called for urgent attention from security agencies.

As of the time of filing this report, authorities were yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.
