BREAKING: Former SGF Babachir Lawal Quits APC Amid Growing Party Tensions

Lawal’s departure adds fuel to growing speculation about potential fractures within the APC, especially in Northern Nigeria, where dissatisfaction among party members appears to be intensifying.

Former SGF Babachir Lawal has quit APC amid growing party tensions.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that amid increasing concerns of internal crisis within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Dr. Babachir David Lawal, has officially resigned from the party.

In a letter addressed to the Chairman of Bangshika Ward in Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Lawal confirmed his departure but clarified that he has not yet joined any other political party.

The resignation letter, titled “Letter of Resignation from the APC,” did not state a specific reason for his decision. However, political observers link his move to a long-standing disagreement with President Bola Tinubu over the controversial Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket adopted by the APC ahead of the 2023 elections.

Part of his letter reads:

“My Chairman Sir, I write to formally notify you of my resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC). In due course, I will make public my current political affiliations where I plan to join other compatriots to work towards making Nigeria a better living place for all citizens. This resignation takes immediate effect. Please, remain blessed and extend my warm regards to other members of your party.”

Lawal’s departure adds fuel to growing speculation about potential fractures within the APC, especially in Northern Nigeria, where dissatisfaction among party members appears to be intensifying.

His exit also comes on the heels of a significant political development: a new opposition coalition led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar recently adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a unified platform to challenge the APC in the 2027 general elections.
