Public Funds, Private Politics: Are Governors Using Nigeria’s Treasury to Fund Party Elections?

Many citizens are increasingly worried about allegations that public funds are being used to finance political activities and party elections while millions of people continue to struggle with hardship and poverty.

 

For many Nigerians, this raises a painful question: Is governance still about service to the people, or has public office become a gateway to political control and access to state resources?

 

Politics in a democracy should focus on development, accountability, and improving the welfare of citizens. Unfortunately, many people now believe that for some politicians, the primary objective of leadership is no longer service but power retention, political dominance, and personal enrichment.

This perception continues to damage public trust in governance.

Nigeria’s treasury belongs to the people. Public funds are meant for infrastructure, healthcare, education, security, job creation, and economic development. They are not designed to serve as financial pipelines for political ambitions or endless election calculations.

 

Yet, at a time when citizens are battling inflation, unemployment, insecurity, poor electricity supply, and rising living costs, allegations surrounding the misuse of public resources for political purposes continue to generate public anger and concern.

 

Even more disturbing is the growing culture where struggling citizens are sometimes manipulated with temporary handouts while deeper economic problems remain unresolved. Hunger and hardship have made many vulnerable, creating an environment where accountability becomes weaker and political loyalty is often purchased at the expense of long-term development.

 

This is dangerous for democracy.

A nation cannot genuinely progress when political interests consistently overshadow the welfare of the people. Leadership should never be reduced to a competition for control over public resources. True leadership demands sacrifice, transparency, responsibility, and a sincere commitment to national development.

 

Nigerians deserve answers regarding how public resources are managed and spent. Citizens have every constitutional and moral right to demand transparency and accountability from those entrusted with public office. Democracy works best when leaders understand that they are custodians of public trust, not owners of public wealth.

 

Despite the challenges, Nigeria is still blessed with honest, capable, and patriotic individuals who genuinely desire progress for the country. What the nation urgently needs is a new political culture built on integrity, service, and responsible governance rather than greed, manipulation, and endless power struggles.

 

The future of Nigeria cannot continue to revolve around politics without accountability. Public resources must serve the people, not political ambition.

 

Until leadership begins to prioritise national interest above personal and party interests, the gap between government and the people will continue to widen.
