FG has shut down over 13 million social media accounts and deleted 59 million offensive posts.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the Federal Government of Nigeria has announced the closure of 13,597,057 social media accounts found guilty of posting offensive content and violating the Code of Practice for Interactive Computer Service Platforms.

The disclosure was contained in the 2024 Code of Practice Compliance Report, jointly issued by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).

According to the report, the accounts were shut down across major platforms including TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter).

In addition, the report revealed that a total of 58,909,112 pieces of offensive content were taken down from different platforms during the review period.

NITDA spokesperson, Hadiza Umar, who released a statement on Wednesday, confirmed that the government also received 754,629 complaints from users. Of these, 420,439 contents were initially removed but later re-uploaded after successful appeals.

Umar commended tech giants such as Google, Microsoft, and TikTok for adhering to the guidelines, noting that their compliance reflects efforts to curb online harm and promote safer digital interactions.

“The compliance reports provide valuable insights into the platforms’ efforts to address user safety concerns in line with the Code of Practice and their community guidelines. This marks a significant step towards fostering a safer and more responsible digital environment for Nigerians,” the statement read.

NITDA further pledged to continue collaborating with industry players, civil society, and regulators to enhance user safety, improve digital literacy, and strengthen trust in Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.
