NewsOnline Nigeria reports that US President-elect Donald Trump has expressed his intention to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin soon after his inauguration on January 20.
“And I know he (Putin) wants to meet, and I’m going to meet him very quickly. I would have done it sooner, but you have to get into the office. For some of the things, you do have to be there,’’ Trump said in an interview with Newsmax.
Earlier in January, Trump had refrained from specifying a timeline for the meeting but emphasised that it would not occur before his inauguration.
On Monday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that while no concrete plans had been made, there was mutual political will to initiate discussions, adding that such engagements would be “very, very necessary and advisable.”
Meanwhile, Trump’s National Security Advisor Designate, Mike Waltz, mentioned that the two leaders might hold a phone call in the near future.
NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the presidential election in the US took place on November 5, 2024. Trump, the Republican candidate and former president (2017-2021), was declared the winner by major networks. Democratic candidate Kamala Harris conceded the race.
The Electoral College finalised the results on December 17, 2024, and the outcome was certified by Congress on January 6. Trump’s inauguration is set for January 20.
