Security analyst and counter-insurgency expert in the Lake Chad region, Zagazola Makama, revealed that Wurgi’s arrest has infuriated Turji, who is now threatening retaliatory attacks.
Recall that a few days ago, troops from the 1 Brigade of the Nigerian Army apprehended Wurgi following credible intelligence.
He was reportedly receiving medical treatment at a hospital in Shinkafi town, Zamfara State, after sustaining injuries during a violent clash with a rival group.
Wurgi’s criminal activities include arms dealing and involvement in high-profile killings, including the murder of Alhaji Isa Mohammad Bawa, the Emir of Gobir in Sokoto State.
The traditional ruler was abducted in July at the Kwanar Maharba area of Sokoto State and subsequently killed three weeks later, after failed ransom negotiations.
The Nigerian Army confirmed that during Wurgi’s arrest, two of his accomplices managed to escape, while troops apprehended another individual who assisted in transporting him using a tricycle.
Makama said Turji has “already contacted influential figures in the Shinkafi area like the village heads/chiefs, threatening to attack their communities to ensure they secure Wurgi’s release from security services.”
The publication said Turji also pledged to “spend any amount of money or livestock necessary to ensure that Wurgi is released.”
He is said to control a significant number of people and livestock and has declared his willingness to use them as leverage to force authorities into compliance.
