Atiku, Obi, Makinde, Amaechi, and other key political heavyweights are reportedly uniting to block Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid.

As Nigeria battles surging inflation and deepening economic uncertainty, political momentum is building ahead of the 2027 general elections. A powerful coalition of prominent political figures is emerging, unified by a single objective: to prevent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu from securing a second term in office.

Tinubu, who assumed the presidency in 2023, is now facing intense scrutiny and growing resistance amid widespread public dissatisfaction. Critics accuse his administration of implementing anti-people policies, failing to alleviate economic hardship, and allegedly steering the country toward a one-party state.

In response, several top politicians from across party lines are coalescing into what could become a formidable opposition force. Below is a list of major political players leading the charge against Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid:

Peter Obi

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has confirmed he will again seek Nigeria’s top seat in 2027. A consistent voice for political reform, Obi has actively pursued strategic alliances to bolster his chances. In March, he held talks with several influential figures including Atiku Abubakar and former Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai about forming a united front.

There is also growing speculation about a possible Atiku-Obi ticket, with reports suggesting Obi may agree to serve as vice president in a proposed one-term, power-sharing agreement. While this plan remains unconfirmed, it underscores the seriousness of the coalition’s efforts to consolidate power.

Atiku Abubakar

Veteran politician and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar remains a central figure in Nigeria’s opposition politics. After contesting under the PDP banner in 2023, Atiku has reasserted his commitment to leading an alternative vision for Nigeria.

Sources indicate that Atiku has proposed a single-term presidency with Peter Obi as his running mate, an idea aimed at uniting the opposition and maximizing voter support. The March coalition announcement has reignited national conversations around unity, strategy, and the future of opposition politics in Nigeria.

Seyi Makinde

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has not hidden his leadership ambitions. In April, he stated that he possesses the capacity to lead the nation, though any presidential decision would depend on the will of the people and his party.

Makinde declared, “I don’t have any doubt that I have the capacity to occupy the highest office in this land… but what I want to do right now, is it what Nigerians are asking for?”

The governor’s rising popularity within the PDP has triggered support from groups like the Brave New Vision Support Group, which recently launched campaign materials across key locations, including Kano State.

Nasir El-Rufai

Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has emerged as one of the fiercest critics of Tinubu’s administration. He has openly declared his involvement in building a strong opposition alliance and dismissed Tinubu’s chances of re-election.

“Anybody that thinks it is possible for President Bola Tinubu to get re-elected is living in another country, not Nigeria,” El-Rufai recently said. He argued that the country’s deteriorating economic and political climate has significantly weakened Tinubu’s support base.

Babachir Lawal

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has also joined the ranks of Tinubu’s political challengers. Lawal is deeply involved in high-level coalition talks and is actively contributing to the opposition’s 2027 strategy.

Rotimi Amaechi and Liyel Imoke

Former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi and former Cross River State Governor Liyel Imoke are playing critical roles in the anti-Tinubu movement.

Amaechi is spearheading efforts to establish a new political platform, while Imoke is coordinating outreach to build alliances with existing parties. Their leadership is shaping the structural foundation of what could become a unified opposition party.

Ralph Nwosu

Ralph Nwosu, National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has strongly condemned the notion that Tinubu is unbeatable in 2027. In a scathing interview, he cited deepening poverty and insecurity as signs of failed governance.

“Poverty, insecurity occasioned by bad government, is devouring the nation. The APC governments have failed woefully… APC as a party is in delusion,” Nwosu said. “They will sweep themselves out with their broom, or we get the citizens to do so.”

The Road to 2027

With growing political dissatisfaction across Nigeria, the emergence of this opposition coalition signals a dramatic shift ahead of the 2027 presidential race. Whether or not these power players can maintain unity and present a credible alternative remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: President Tinubu’s path to re-election will not be without significant resistance.
