Google data has shown surge in AI use among Nigerian students for studies.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that Nigerian students are increasingly turning to Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a study partner, according to new Google Search trend data that highlights a major shift in learning habits across the country.

Searches for “AI + studying” surged by more than 200% compared to 2024, showing how students are adopting AI tools not only for homework and exam preparation but also as everyday companions in their academic journey.

The rise is part of a wider surge of curiosity about AI nationwide. Search interest in the technology reached record highs in 2025, growing by 60% in just the past year. Queries such as “AI + lessons” also spiked by 60%, pointing to a growing appetite for digital learning support.

AI Across School Subjects

Data shows that students are using AI to tackle a variety of subjects:

  • AI + Chemistry searches rose by 50%

  • AI + Maths increased by 30%

  • AI + Languages grew by 30%

  • AI + Grammar rose by 20%

The most common queries included:

  • “What is the best AI in the world for solving mathematical problems?”

  • “How to use AI to solve math problems?”

  • “AI tutor for students”

  • “Free AI tools for studying”

These searches underline a strong demand for accessible, subject-specific AI study aids.

Beyond the Classroom

Students are also keen to understand AI itself. Searches such as “how to use AI” (+80%), “what is the full meaning of AI” (+80%), and “who is the father of AI” (+70%) ranked among the most popular over the last 12 months.

At the same time, searches for “AI detection” jumped by 290%, reflecting growing awareness about academic integrity and responsible AI use.

The term “Generative AI” also broke out as a top search, often linked to professional certifications, suggesting that students and young professionals are exploring AI skills for future career opportunities.

Google Reacts to the Shift

Olumide Balogun, Google’s West Africa Director, welcomed the findings:

“It’s inspiring to see Nigerian students so eagerly embrace AI to support their learning journeys. This back-to-school season, the data shows that students are not just using AI for answers, but as a tool to deepen their understanding of complex subjects. This curiosity is key to fostering a new generation of innovators.”
