ADC has opened up on Peter Obi’s party membership status amid crumbling coalition talks.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports as rumors swirl about Peter Obi’s possible return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has clarified the former Labour Party presidential candidate’s membership status within their coalition, amid rising tensions in opposition unity talks.

ADC spokesman Bolaji Abdullahi told Channels Television on Wednesday night that while Peter Obi is a key figure in the ADC-led coalition, he is not a formal, card-carrying member of the party. Abdullahi explained that Obi has been actively involved from the coalition’s inception, attending nearly every meeting, but requested to remain officially outside the ADC to complete his electoral processes under the Labour Party in 2023.

“The same arrangement applies to Mallam Nasir El-Rufai. Both were allowed by the leadership to finish the election processes they began in their respective parties,” Abdullahi said.

This clarification comes amid speculation that Obi may be considering rejoining the PDP ahead of the 2027 elections, a move that some fear could further weaken the fragile opposition coalition. The ADC spokesman cautioned Obi against risking the unity they have built, insisting that Obi’s role in the coalition remains critical.

The political uncertainty surrounding Obi’s party allegiance continues to stir unease among opposition leaders and analysts, raising questions about the future cohesion of the alliance formed to challenge the ruling APC’s dominance.
