NewsOnline Nigeria reports that an Enugu Air aircraft veered off the runway after landing at Benin Airport on Thursday, prompting an emergency response and a formal investigation by the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB).

The airline confirmed in a statement that all passengers and crew members were safely evacuated, with no injuries or fatalities recorded.

According to Enugu Air, the aircraft has been secured, while the relevant aviation authorities have been notified in line with established safety procedures.

“The aircraft has been secured and the relevant aviation authorities have been notified in line with established procedures. An assessment of the aircraft and the circumstances surrounding the occurrence is currently underway,” the airline stated.

The runway excursion temporarily disrupted flight operations at Benin Airport as emergency responders secured the aircraft and aviation officials commenced an assessment of the incident.

Enugu Air said the development could lead to temporary adjustments to some flight schedules, assuring affected passengers that they would be contacted directly and provided with the necessary assistance.

The airline reaffirmed that the safety of its passengers, crew and operations remains its top priority and pledged full cooperation with aviation authorities investigating the incident.

NSIB begins investigation

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has launched an investigation into the runway excursion involving the airline’s Embraer E170 aircraft.

The bureau disclosed that the aircraft, operating as Flight 4264 with registration 5N-ENR, was travelling from Lagos to Benin when it overran the end of Runway 05 during landing.

In a statement signed by its Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, Funke Adebayo-Arowojobe, the NSIB confirmed that all passengers and crew members were accounted for and that no injuries were reported.

According to the bureau, its investigation team arrived at the scene within minutes of receiving notification of the incident.

The NSIB said investigators are preserving evidence, interviewing the flight crew and other relevant personnel, examining the aircraft, assessing runway conditions and reviewing operational and technical data to determine the cause of the runway excursion.

The bureau added that the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and other relevant airport authorities have been notified, while the aircraft remains secured pending the outcome of the investigation.
