NASU and SSANU has commenced nationwide strike over unresolved allowance dispute.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the Joint Action Committee of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has confirmed the commencement of a nationwide strike from Friday, May 1, 2026.

In a letter dated April 30, 2026, and addressed to Tunji Alausa, the unions blamed the industrial action on the Federal Government’s failure to conclude ongoing renegotiations and provide a fresh proposal on workers’ allowances.

The notice was jointly signed by NASU General Secretary, Peters Adeyemi, and SSANU President, Mohammed Ibrahim.

According to the unions, the strike officially begins at midnight on May 1, 2026.

“We write to acknowledge receipt of your correspondence and to equally appreciate the Honourable Minister of Education for withdrawing the contentious letter,” the union leaders stated, referring to the earlier circular on a proposed 30 per cent increase in the Consolidated Non-Teaching Tools Allowance.

However, the unions insisted that the withdrawal of the circular failed to address the major issues at the centre of the dispute.

“Despite this, the withdrawal did not resolve the core issues in dispute,” the statement read.

“The consensus outcome of the consultation is that our demand vis-à-vis the slow pace of the renegotiation process has not been met.”

The unions further disclosed that the Federal Government had yet to present an alternative proposal to replace the withdrawn allowance package.

The latest development raises concerns over possible disruptions to activities across Nigerian universities and other tertiary institutions as the standoff between the unions and the Federal Government continues.
