FG has finally broken silence on Tinubu’s failed attempts to meet Trump amid CPC designation.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the Federal Government has clarified why President Bola Tinubu has not yet visited the United States to meet with President Donald Trump, despite rising diplomatic tensions between both countries.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, said President Tinubu would meet Trump “once the situation is right for him,” stressing that the President remains committed to maintaining strong US–Nigeria relations.

Idris explained that Tinubu’s absence from the US should not be misinterpreted, noting that the President visited the United Nations in New York shortly after assuming office.

Trump’s Threat and FG’s Response

Diplomatic friction escalated after Trump redesignated Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC), alleging widespread killings of Christians.

In a fiery post on Truth Social, Trump threatened possible military action if Nigeria failed to address insecurity.

“If the Nigerian Government continues to allow the killing of Christians… the U.S.A. will immediately stop all aid… and may very well go into that now disgraced country, ‘guns-a-blazing,’” Trump declared, instructing his “Department of War” to prepare for potential action.

The remarks drew global reaction, prompting the Nigerian government to firmly reject the allegations.

President Tinubu, responding earlier in the week, stressed that Nigeria does not engage in targeted killings.

“Nigeria is a country with constitutional guarantees to protect citizens of all faiths,” he said.

Nigeria Moves to Ease Tensions

A high-level Nigerian delegation led by National Security Adviser (NSA) Nuhu Ribadu has since travelled to Washington for diplomatic engagement aimed at easing tensions and strengthening bilateral ties.

Idris emphasised that the government is actively addressing insecurity nationwide, despite the recent spike in kidnappings and attacks in northern states such as Kebbi and Niger.

US Congress Reviews CPC Status

On Thursday, the US Congress held a public hearing reviewing Trump’s CPC redesignation, drawing further global attention to Nigeria’s security situation.

Nigeria continues to battle diverse threats, including banditry, terrorism, and abductions for ransom, with multiple incidents recorded this week alone.

The Federal Government insists that despite challenges, it is committed to restoring stability and maintaining constructive international partnerships.
