Starmer is reportedly banking on Trump’s State visit to reinforce U.K.-U.S. ties amid political strains.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that Prime Minister Keir Starmer is counting on the pomp and ceremony of a royal welcome for U.S. President Donald Trump’s state visit to Britain this week to bolster his standing at home and highlight fresh opportunities for economic cooperation.

Trump is due to arrive late Tuesday, with engagements scheduled over two days that include a royal reception with King Charles and bilateral meetings with Starmer. The visit, heavy on red-carpet treatment, is expected to showcase investment deals aimed at drawing the two economies closer.

Finance Minister Rachel Reeves and U.S. Trade Secretary Scott Bessent will also meet to announce a new “Transatlantic Taskforce” designed to deepen cooperation between London and Washington’s financial sectors. U.S. officials said more than $10 billion worth of agreements, spanning energy and technology, are expected to be unveiled.

“This historic second state visit is set to highlight and renew the special relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom,” a senior U.S. official said Monday.

Starmer Under Pressure at Home

Starmer, facing internal turmoil after sacking Peter Mandelson as ambassador to Washington over ties to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein, is eager to demonstrate that close relations with Trump can bring tangible benefits to Britain.

A Downing Street spokesperson stressed that the prime minister views the visit “squarely through the lens of delivering for working people,” citing U.S. investment pledges set to create 1,800 jobs and a civil nuclear partnership expected to lower energy costs.

Still, the Labour leader enters the week under pressure. The forced departures of both his deputy, Angela Rayner, and Mandelson have stirred unrest among Labour lawmakers, who are questioning his political judgment at a time when Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party is surging in the polls.

Potential Flashpoints

The Epstein scandal looms large, with scrutiny extending not only to Mandelson’s connections but also to Trump’s past relationship with the late sex offender—something the U.S. president denies was significant. Trump may also weigh in on Britain’s online safety laws, which some of his allies have criticized as a curb on free speech and a burden on U.S. tech firms.

The visit follows a turbulent week for Trump, who was shaken by the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at a Utah event.

Royal Pageantry and High-Stakes Diplomacy

On Wednesday, Trump and First Lady Melania Trump will be welcomed with full royal pageantry, including a carriage procession, a state banquet, a military flypast, and a gun salute. On Thursday, Starmer will host Trump at Chequers, the prime minister’s official country residence, for talks expected to focus on trade, tariffs on steel and aluminum, Russia’s war in Ukraine, and the conflict in Gaza.

Trump will be accompanied by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, while Britain’s new foreign secretary Yvette Cooper will lead talks on security and diplomacy. Business leaders attending include Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and OpenAI chief Sam Altman, underscoring the technology-heavy agenda.

Olivia O’Sullivan, director at Chatham House, said Britain hopes that deepening alignment with Washington will help keep it “on the cutting edge of frontier technology” dominated by the U.S. and China.
